Minutes after we published a story yesterday about how immigration agents keep shooting people in cars, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed 26-year-old Joan Sebastian Guerrero in his car in Biddeford, Maine. Our colleagues at the Maine Morning Star are covering the fallout.
The Daily Wire — co-founded by right-wing commentator Ben Shapiro, so, grain of salt — reported this morning that immigration agents have been instructed to discontinue vehicle stops “for now” following the ICE killings in Maine and Texas.
Twin Cities immigrant rights activists plan to protest the killings of Guerrero and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on Thursday at the intersection of Lake Street and Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis.
Remember during Operation Metro Surge when former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said her department would “rapidly acquire and deploy body cameras to DHS law enforcement across the country”?
A DHS funding bill passed in April included $20 million for body-worn cameras — but none of the agents involved in the past week’s shootings were wearing them.

Minnesota prosecutors announced on Monday they obtained a trove of evidence from the federal government in the killings of two U.S. citizens — Renee Good and Alex Pretti — and the shooting of Venezuelan national Julio Sosa-Celis by federal immigration agents during Operation Metro Surge.
The evidence includes body camera footage, officer statements and the Honda Pilot in which Good was killed, all of which the federal government had previously refused to turn over in a major breach of the tradition of cooperation between state and federal law enforcement agencies.
